Programme notes:

soak, smear, seep, stain explores a multi-layering process of a past memory: a monochromatic landscape in Huang Shan filled with dirt roads, and houses worn beyond repair, strangely contrasted by a single brightly-colored figure. To reflect this image, a meditative improvisation of metal sheets and organic substances was made; I sculpted waves of utterances in the strings to reflect the grey landscape, and interjections of percussion to reflect the sparse colors.

Sweeping gestures from the octet, mirrors the expansive and fluid motion of a paintbrush. Sounds from the ensemble and tape emerge and submerge, existing in the foreground and background simultaneously- staining each other and existing as one. The consistent interweaving in these two different elements create a forced conversation within a malleable soundscape.

Helen Frankenthaler (1928 - 2011) was known as an abstract expressionist, hugely influential in American postwar painting. She worked with early small-scaled watercolor paintings; later she translated these skills into her large-scale oil paintings. By pouring paint and using very few brushstrokes, she achieved a very fluid, watercolor-like effect in her oil works. Frankenthaler often exposes the unprepared canvas, treating it as a crucial component to the finished painting.
